Commercial Ice Machine That Stopped Producing

A commercial ice machine was running but barely producing ice, a classic case of scale buildup restricting water flow.

The Call

Ice production had dropped off gradually over a couple of weeks rather than stopping all at once, usually a sign of a slow mechanical problem rather than a dead part.

On-Site Diagnosis

The water inlet valve and spray system were both partially blocked with mineral scale, common on Valley water supplies. Reduced water flow meant reduced ice, exactly matching the gradual decline.

The Repair

Descaled the water system, replaced the inlet valve (scale had pitted the seat enough that it wouldn't fully close), and ran a full clean cycle per the manufacturer's service spec.

Verified Fixed

Full ice production restored within the first cycle. Left the owner with a simple descaling schedule to keep the mineral buildup from creeping back.

Commercial ice machines are one of the pieces of equipment hit hardest by hard water. A gradual decline in output almost always means scale, not a dying compressor.
